WIBTA for putting my stepson up for adoption after his mother passed?

In a quiet home, a 28-year-old widower juggles life with a 2-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old stepson with severe autism and heart issues. After his wife’s tragic death during childbirth, he’s faced relentless challenges—frequent hospital trips, no daycare options, and a lost job. Considering adoption for his stepson to give his daughter a better life and regain his own, he’s torn by guilt over failing his late wife’s son.

This heart-wrenching saga of duty, loss, and impossible choices has Reddit urging professional help over adoption. Readers will be drawn to this raw struggle, eager to weigh in on where family loyalty ends and personal survival begins.

‘WIBTA for putting my stepson up for adoption after his mother passed?’

This widower’s struggle with his stepson’s complex needs highlights a gut-wrenching family dilemma. His stepson’s autism and heart condition demand constant care, leaving little room for his daughter or personal life. Considering adoption reflects desperation, not neglect, but the low chance of a 5-year-old with disabilities being adopted raises concerns about foster care or group homes.

Dr. David Brodzinsky, an adoption expert, notes, “Children with special needs often face long waits in foster care, which can destabilize them.” About 20% of foster children have disabilities, and many age out without permanent homes. The widower’s exhaustion is valid—caregiving burnout affects 30% of single parents of disabled children. His family’s rejection and lack of support amplify the strain.

Instead of adoption, state agencies could place the stepson in a residential care program with professional support, allowing visits to maintain family ties. Consulting a social worker could map out options.

  1. Get help with proper place to put him. NTA for needing something for him. but PLEASE stay in this child’s life. These are kids that can fall through the cracks. He needs someone in his corner to make sure he’s cared for properly. Yes there are people that will do that but they have lots of clients usually way to many. things get missed things get overlooked. He needs someone to make sure that doesn’t happen.
