The flowers he brought home couldn’t mask the betrayal.

Marriages often buckle under the weight of unspoken expectations, but this story screams imbalance. The wife’s grueling routine—full-time work, childcare, and endless chores—contrasts starkly with her husband’s refusal to pitch in. His divorce threat, revealed as a manipulative scare tactic, exposes a deeper issue: a lack of mutual respect. She’s not just fighting for a clean kitchen; she’s battling for her dignity in a partnership that feels more like a solo act.

This dynamic isn’t unique. A 2020 Pew Research study found that 59% of women in heterosexual marriages feel they do more household work than their partners, often leading to resentment (soucre). The husband’s minimal financial contribution (15%) and refusal to share domestic duties amplify this inequity.

His manipulation—admitting he used divorce to “scare” her—suggests a power play, not partnership. Dr. John Gottman, a renowned relationship expert, notes, “Contempt is the number one predictor of divorce. When one partner dismisses the other’s needs, it erodes trust” (soucre). Here, the husband’s tactics dismiss her exhaustion, weaponizing her commitment to silence her.

This situation reflects broader societal issues: gendered expectations of domestic labor. Women, even primary breadwinners, often shoulder the “second shift” of unpaid housework. The husband’s reliance on outdated norms—expecting her to manage everything while he “rests”—clashes with her demand for equity. His post-threat flowers and chocolates? Classic love-bombing, not accountability. As Gottman’s research suggests, genuine repair requires action—like scrubbing dishes—not gestures that dodge the root issue.

Advice: She should set clear boundaries, perhaps with a therapist’s guidance, to redefine their roles. A written chore chart could make expectations concrete. If he resists, couples counseling might expose his unwillingness to change. She should also consult a lawyer quietly to understand her options, protecting her and her daughter’s future.

  1. I guess your husband missed the memo, you know the “way things work as an adult” one.
Newsflash, no one likes to clean, period.
What they like is living in a clean environment. Also shocking but true, you only get one mom in life, she is going to be the ONLY woman in your life willing to clean up after you, if you are spoiled and depending how important it is to her to raise a child in a clean environment. And likely, once you stop wearing diapers you will be expected to help her.
And finally, Every. Single. Person. In society, no matter where they are from, what gender, economic status, or age must contribute to ensure their own well being or there is no being well.
How they contribute varies, but even the very rich have to pay someone to clean for them.
He has a very dirty, lonely life ahead if he does not accept this

  3. This man baby has shown you who he is. Believe him. Stop wasting your life on him. He will never change. He might pretend to for a while. But will back slide. And then there you are doing everything alone. Divorce him. Your already doing all the work anyway. Plus do not let him play the 50 50 custody card. Its a ploy to get out of paying child support. He will just dump the kids on his mom most of the time. And be a no show often. You will need child support to cover bills and help paying for childcare.

I woukd be asking for a seperation and if he wants to stay a family he needs to step up or ship out
Tell him to get therapy and then decide if he wants to help being a parent…
Till then i would stop catering to him..stop making him lunches..stop doing his laundry and cook dinner only if you feel like it ..leave his clothes where he leaves them if not throw them on the floor and kick them into a corner..
You have treated him like a king for So long he thinks he has it made..but he foesnt treat you like his queen..
I think resentment is setting in because you have been the maid..the cook for So long and now you are getting burnt out and the stress is catching up…
