Family dinners should be warm and welcoming, but for OP, they’ve become a verbal boxing ring. Beth’s persistent criticism of OP’s housewife role reveals a deeper clash of values, where respect seems to have left the table. This situation pits personal choice against societal expectations, with OP defending her fulfilling, busy life against Beth’s dismissive attitude.

Dr. John Gottman, a renowned relationship expert, notes, “Contempt is the kiss of death in any relationship” (Gottman Institute). Beth’s remarks drip with contempt, undermining OP’s contributions as a homemaker. This isn’t just about jealousy, as OP suspects, but a failure to empathize with differing life choices. Beth’s judgment may stem from her own pressures as a working woman, yet her delivery lacks civility.

The broader issue here touches on societal views of unpaid domestic work. Studies show that homemakers contribute the equivalent of $40,000-$70,000 annually in uncompensated labor (Investopedia). OP’s routine—cooking, cleaning, volunteering—demands skill and dedication, yet faces devaluation, especially from younger generations prioritizing careers.

For OP, setting boundaries was crucial, but communication could bridge the gap. Inviting Beth for a calm discussion, perhaps with OP’s son mediating, might uncover her motives.

These are Reddit’s hot takes, but do they hold up in real life? Some see Beth as outright rude, while others wonder if her comments mask deeper insecurities. Either way, the internet’s got OP’s back—but what’s the real story behind Beth’s behavior?

This tale of family friction leaves us pondering respect, boundaries, and the value of unseen labor. OP’s decision to ban Beth was bold, but was it the only way to reclaim her peace? The Reddit hive mind leans toward “NTA,” yet the divide between OP and her son suggests deeper wounds. What would you do if faced with relentless judgment in your own home? Share your thoughts and experiences—how would you handle a Beth in your life?

  1. This is definitely coming from the son.
Either he himself views his mom as useless and lazy, which is why he went for the career woman he is now using as a mouthpiece to say what he’s been thinking without getting in trouble directly, OR, son has been harassing his wife about being more like his mom and wife is lashing out at the MIL in response and to make being a housewife seem undesirable to her husband, OR, son picked a wife who wants to be a house spouse, but refuses to ‘let’ her, and so she is lashing out at MIL from jealousy.
But my money is on the first one: son is letting wife say what he’s been thinking.
