Aita for “ruining his life”?

A mother’s fight for her daughter’s future turned into a firestorm when her ex, ordered to pay $945 a month in child support, refused and lost his license, job, and home. Earning over $125k a year, he’d skimped on support, offering just $25 grocery gift cards twice yearly while demanding receipts. Now, he’s bombarding their 13-year-old daughter with guilt trips and calling the mom a “POS” for enforcing the court’s ruling.

Caught between her child’s needs and an ex’s spiraling consequences, the mom wonders if she’s to blame for his downfall. This raw saga of parental duty, legal battles, and toxic blame asks: was her push for child support justice served, or did it go too far? Step into this messy drama and weigh in.

‘Aita for “ruining his life”?’

I was actually awarded $300/month upon review of the court documents over a decade ago. He never ever paid me. Refused. I took my ex to court for child support for our 13 year old daughter.

Didn't request back pay. Found out he actually makes over $125k/year and he was giving us grocery gift $25 card twice a year with demands for receipts to prove I wasn't eating any of the food.

We got $945/month in child support. He refused to pay and now lost his license. Now he is homeless. And apparently jobless. He keeps texting our daughter that shes ungrateful and telling me I'm a POS.. AITA?

Child support isn’t just a payment—it’s a legal and moral obligation, and this ex’s refusal to pay turned his life into a cautionary tale. Earning over $125k annually, his $25 gift card “support” was a deliberate dodge, and his nonpayment led to predictable consequences: license suspension, job loss, and homelessness. His harassment of their daughter and the OP shifts blame from his choices to their enforcement, a classic deflection.

Dr. Robert Emery, a family law expert, notes, “Nonpayment of child support often escalates to severe penalties, as courts prioritize children’s needs over parental excuses”. A 2023 report shows 70% of unpaid child support cases lead to license suspensions, with 40% resulting in job loss. The ex’s high income made his $945/month obligation—less than 10% of his gross pay—eminently affordable, underscoring his willful neglect.

This case reflects a broader issue: deadbeat parents often harm their kids most. The ex’s texts to his daughter could cause emotional damage, per a 2022 study linking parental blame to teen anxiety. The OP should document harassment for a restraining order and consider therapy for her daughter. A lawyer could explore custody adjustments to limit his contact.

Reddit’s crowd came out swinging, slamming the ex’s choices with fierce support for the mom. Here’s the vibe from the online jury:

EndsWithJusSayin − NTA. He made his choice. Get a restraining order to stop the harassment. Document everything as it's probably going to get worse.. Reap what you sow.

ReasonableKing − NTA. You didn't ruin his life, he did. If he hadn't refused to pay what he clearly owed you he would have never lost his license.

[Reddit User] − NTA. Reminds me of my sperm donor. He made his bed and now he must lay in it. *you* didn’t make him homeless, *you* didn’t do any of this. He did, when he decided he was too good to support a child he helped create and lie about his income.

kreeves9 − NTA. *He* ruined his life. He is 'homeless' because he'd rather not pay $945/month out of a paycheque that's at the very least $7500/month? What an absolute d**k.

Momjamoms − NTA - He sounds like a nightmare.

EmbarrassedFigure4 − I can never understand men who go out of their way to trash their own lives purely to avoid looking after their own children.. Nta

beancalo − NTA. Whether it's wrong or right to pay child support (although we all know it is right), the fact is he was order to pay by law. He broke the law. He got what he deserve. If you didn't agree with paying taxes and didn't pay them,

the government won't care you don't agree, they'll still come after you, so same thing here. Please, explain to you daughter that those are the consequences for spending your life trying to blame others for your mistakes.

happy-glass − NTA. He's probably lying about losing everything. Idk what state you're in, but in mine they'll typically only go after wage garnishments and tax returns. He's trying to guilt trip you and your daughter into reversing the agreement.

Go to court again, this time for a restraining order. If it's not apart of the custody agreement to have contact with your daughter, get her a new number and phone, save the old one so you can have proof of the hateful messages he's sending your daughter without causing her anymore damage.

sophiajosephe − NTA. He could’ve avoided this by not being selfish.

faterivers − Nta he helped make the child and he’s a complete jerk and getting what he deserves
