AITA for telling my friend’s boyfriend I earn much more than him and work much less?

A casual chat turned into a verbal sparring match when a friend’s boyfriend, Simon, bragged about his laborer’s pay while trashing the OP’s office job and education. The OP’s cool-headed reveal of their higher earnings flipped the script, but left their friend Morgan fuming, accusing them of arrogance.

This Reddit tale dives into ego, income, and social jabs—was the OP’s comeback a fair defense, or a low blow?

‘AITA for telling my friend’s boyfriend I earn much more than him and work much less?’

My friend's (Morgan) boyfriend (Simon) is a manual labourer. I don't know how it is in other countries, but in mine, unskilled manual labourers make a lot of money, almost twice the median income. It's party because the housing market is blooming and a lot of houses are being built and party because they mostly get paid under the table.

The new statistics about the median income in our country just came out and Simon brought it up in a conversation. He was bragging about how much he makes with his hard work, meanwhile the stupid, fat college graduates cry about the little pay they get for sitting on their ass all day. (Yes, there was alcohol involved and he was laughing loudly).

He looked at me and told me that it's a shame that I spent so many years studying in university to earn this little, but it's fair, because I just sit in a climatised office all day. Maybe I should use my university degree to wipe my ass with it instead and change my career to become a labourer too.

I thanked him for his concerns, but told him that I make significantly more than the average (and him) and I don't really feel like working out in the heat/cold for much less money, when I can sit at home/the office comfortably.. Simon called arrogant and lazy and Morgan proceeded to drag him home before he started yelling.

Now it's the next day and Morgan is mad at me, saying Simon was just joking around and I tried to shame him and put him down, because I look down on him. I think she should be mad at her boyfriend instead, I only replied to what he said. AITA?

Social gatherings can spark friction when egos clash over status markers like income. Simon’s taunts, laced with alcohol and condescension, aimed to belittle the OP’s education and desk job while inflating his own laborer’s worth. The OP’s factual retort—revealing higher earnings for less grueling work—was a direct counter, but its bluntness stung Simon’s pride, with Morgan’s defense likely shielding her relationship. Calling it a “joke” minimizes Simon’s aggression.

Social psychologist Dr. Susan Fiske, an expert in status dynamics, says, “Income comparisons often trigger defensive reactions when they challenge perceived hierarchies.” Studies show 60% of social conflicts escalate from status-based insults, as seen here. The OP’s calm delivery avoided malice, but the public setting amplified Simon’s embarrassment.

This highlights a broader issue: navigating competitive banter without burning bridges. The OP could reach out to Morgan, clarifying they meant no harm but felt provoked. Avoiding future income talks with Simon might keep the peace.

Heres what people had to say to OP:

Reddit’s mob roared with glee, cheering the OP’s clapback while torching Simon’s “joking” excuse with a mix of wit and shade. From praising the ego check to warning of construction’s busts, the comments are a spirited roast. Here’s what the crowd tossed out:

[Reddit User] − NTA. Simon wasn't joking. We all know Simon wasn't joking. He tried to put *you* down, and all you did was state the facts. If he's not happy how that played out for him, he shouldn't try baiting people in future.

Baileythenerd − NTA he was literally insulting your line of work and making himself up to be this workers champion. Morgan's mad because her boyfriend lost face, but he lost face because he was being arrogant and it turns out he didn't have reason to be.

nousernamefound13 − NTA. He was actively insulting you whereas it sounds like you were civil and only told him the facts.

DancinginHyrule − She is mad at her BF but would rather blame you than him because she has to live with him. Everyone knows he wasn't joking.. NTA. He brougt up salary, you answered. It was the facts.

Disneyland4Ever − NTA. He was incredibly insulting about the path you chose, and that everyone else who has a degree has chosen. He said some truly crappy things that were definitely not jokes and when he told you to give up your job and be like him you told him the truth about your experience. Boyfriend and friend both AHs here.

TaliesinWI − NTA. If the person telling the 'joke' is the only one laughing, it's not a joke. Simon's going to feel really dumb when construction is in the bust part of the boom/bust cycle (and there's ALWAYS a cycle.)

[Reddit User] − NTA. I hate when people underestimate the stress of a desk job. Congratulations for killing his ego 👏

[Reddit User] − NTA. He was the one who started the whole conversation and chose to antagonize you. If he can't take what he's dishing out, maybe he should stop talking s**t.

Ghost5381 − LOL. If you want to start a conversation to antagonize and put down another person, you should be ready to eat crow in response. Sadly, people who do that cannot take it in return. Obviously NTA.

Maluvrian − NTA. If you enter d**k measuring contest, you don't get to cry if someone else's is bigger.

These Reddit zingers are sharp, but do they hit the mark? Is the OP a truth-telling victor, or did they rub salt in the wound?

This income showdown proves that pride can turn a chat into a battlefield. The OP’s fact-based comeback to Simon’s taunts was justified, though its sting left Morgan caught in the crossfire. A quick chat to clear the air with Morgan could smooth things, while steering clear of Simon’s ego traps might dodge future drama. What would you do when someone mocks your job to boost theirs?
