AITA for refusing to accept my mom’s friend’s MacBook after her autistic son broke mine and asking her to buy me a new one?

A 16-year-old girl received a brand-new MacBook Pro as a rare big gift for her excellent school performance. When her mom’s friend visited with her children, the 10-year-old autistic boy smashed the laptop after being denied access to play Roblox on it. The mother now insists on $1,800 cash for a new one instead of accepting the friend’s old MacBook Air.

What makes the story more complicated is the boy’s autism, which the friend’s mom cites as reason for leniency, while accusing the teen of greed for refusing a five-year-old used replacement.

‘AITA for refusing to accept my mom’s friend’s MacBook after her autistic son broke mine and asking her to buy me a new one?’

The poster received a special new laptop as recognition for her hard work.

I (16F) got a brand new MacBook Pro for my birthday last month. My family isn’t rich and I don’t usually get gifts like that.

My parents said they got me that because I’ve been doing great at school and they thought I deserved something nice after using an old Chromebook for years.

During a visit, the young boy demanded to use it and reacted violently when refused.

This incident underscores parental responsibility for a child’s actions, regardless of neurodiversity, and the expectation of fair restitution when property is damaged. At its heart, the conflict involves accountability: the boy’s meltdown led to destruction, but his mother failed to supervise closely in someone else’s home, knowing his potential for impulsive behavior.

Offering a significantly older, lower-spec model as replacement dismisses the value of the original gift, while framing the teen’s insistence on equivalence as greed shifts blame inappropriately. Autism may explain limited impulse control, but it does not absolve parents from preventing harm or compensating fully—supervision and redirection are key strategies.

Some might argue the teen could have de-escalated by sharing temporarily or that demanding cash feels inflexible, especially impacting innocent siblings. Compassion for the family’s financial strain and the challenges of raising an autistic child could suggest accepting the used laptop as a gesture of goodwill.

In wider society, such cases highlight the need for parents of children with special needs to proactively manage environments and teach consequences where possible, while hosts set clear boundaries. Refusing inadequate replacement upholds fairness and teaches that actions have real costs. The mother’s gossip and resentment reveal defensiveness rather than ownership, potentially straining friendships but reinforcing that victims should not bear the burden alone.

Here’s what Redditors had to say:

The social network overwhelmingly agrees the teen is not at fault for insisting on proper replacement, viewing the mother’s supervision lapse as the root issue rather than the child’s disability or the teen’s boundary-setting. Fair compensation matters more than partial fixes.
