Daughter Confronts Her ‘Loving’ Mother After Discovering Her Horrifying Hidden Beliefs About Humanity

We all know that moment when we realize our parents are flawed, complex human beings rather than the flawless heroes of our childhood. For one 37-year-old daughter, that realization didn’t just bend her perception of her mother—it shattered it completely.

She always knew her 66-year-old retired teacher mother as a pillar of the community, beloved by former students and constantly offering a helping hand. Yet, behind this warm, maternal facade lay a chilling belief that human life is only worth its economic contribution.

When a road trip conversation exposed the full, horrifying depth of these beliefs, years of love clashed with sudden revulsion. If you have ever dealt with family drama that tested your limits, you will want to read on.

Daughter Confronts Her 'Loving' Mother After Discovering Her Horrifying Hidden Beliefs About Humanity

AITAH for telling my mom she's a monster and that her beliefs make it hard for me to like her?

The shocking contrast between a mother’s warm, maternal care and her cold, utilitarian worldview sets a jarring foundation for this family conflict. For years, these dark beliefs remained quiet, but they eventually boiled over.

My mom (66) has (what I consider) very messed up worldviews.

We've had several conversations where she's said that people are only worth what they can contribute to society and that when people get too old to contribute significantly, they should...

Also, anyone with disabilities so advanced that they can't contribute should not be given medical care, with the result that they will die.

Children with significant learning disabilities shouldn't be given any resources at all (and really shouldn't exist).

And she is pro-life because the baby born could grow to be a useful member of society—unless it has developmental issues, in which case it should be humanely euthanized after...

I'm not exaggerating in any way.

These are her real thoughts, nearly word for word.

Apart from these intense hot takes, she is actually a wonderfully loving person.

She's a retired teacher who is beloved in the community and fought hard for her students.

She is kind and helps almost everyone.

Honestly, it's super shocking that someone so wonderful could hold absolutely despicable views, in my opinion.

We have a great relationship 98% of the time, and she's been incredibly loving and supportive of me throughout my 37 years of life, so it's hard to reconcile these...

Confined to the small, inescapable space of a moving car, the daughter eventually reached her breaking point. She forced a painful, long-overdue truth directly into the open, forever changing the dynamic of their relationship.

Anyway, where I think I might be the AH...

Yesterday, we were on a short road trip, and somehow we got on the topic of abortion.

That's when she hit me with her view that I described above.

I was floored.

This progressed to us hashing out all the other stuff again, and I finally kind of lost it and told her she holds the same views as Holocaust eugenicists, that...

I did say that I loved her and always would, but made it very clear her views were despicable to me.

Now things are weird between us, and I think I may have gone too far.

I've been considering apologizing, but every time I think about what she believes, I am re-horrified.

I have told her numerous times that therapy might be a good option, and I stand by that.

However, I can't imagine how hard it was to hear your own kid call you a monster.

I love my mom and don't want to hurt her unnecessarily.

Updates

UPDATE: It's come up a lot in the comments, so I'll just reply here.

She feels the same way about herself and has often said when she gets to the point she can nolonger benefit her family or community in meaningful ways she is...

A little before the pandemic she thought she might be showing signs of Alzheimer's/dementia and warned me that if she was diagnosed, she would immediately end things.

She feels that since she's not a hypocrite and holds herself to her own standards, she is justified.

Tldr: my mom thinks people should die if they can’t be useful, and I called her a monster and said her views made it hard for me to like her.

Now she’s sad.

Community Opinions

Reddit overwhelmingly backed the daughter, with many pointing out the terrifying irony of a retired teacher harboring such dark, anti-humanitarian beliefs.

NTA don’t apologise.
It was as hard for her to hear as you hearing her views which honestly are disgusting.

A few commenters urged the daughter to investigate whether these extreme views might be a defense mechanism masking her mother's own fears of aging and losing her independence.

Confronting a parent’s darkest thoughts is never easy, especially when those thoughts challenge the very core of human rights and dignity. While many believe the daughter was entirely justified in calling out her mother’s extreme views, others wonder if a gentler approach focused on setting strict boundaries might have kept the peace without compromising her morals.
