AITA for kicking my sister out of my wedding?

Weddings are supposed to be magical, emotional days – especially when the theme is out-of-this-world. One groom and his husband planned a stunning space-themed ceremony complete with galaxy cakes, star decorations, and fairy lights. They asked the groom’s sister to serve as ring bearer, trusting her to keep things classy despite their playful family dynamic.

Instead, she arrived dressed head-to-toe as the planet Saturn – rings and all – insisting the pun was too perfect to pass up. When she refused to change into formal attire, the groom gave her an ultimatum: switch outfits or leave. She chose the door, and now the internet is weighing in on whether he overreacted. Spoiler: most say he absolutely did the right thing.

‘AITA for kicking my sister out of my wedding?’

The wedding was small, intimate, and perfectly themed.

I (27 M) recently got married to my wonderful husband. It was a small wedding with just our family and closest friends.

My husband and I both love space, so we decided to have a space themed wedding. We had star decorations, a galaxy marble cake, and fairy lights. I even wore...

She was supposed to be ring bearer – but showed up as a planet.

My sister (32 F) was invited to be the ring bearer as she and I are very close. However, when she showed up at the wedding, she was wearing a...

The joke didn’t land, and she wouldn’t back down.

We made it very clear in our invitations that this wedding was strictly formal. My sister and I joke around a lot, so I laughed about it and asked her...

But she fully planned to bring us the rings in her Halloween costume. She refused to change into a serious outfit, saying that our family would find it funny because...

The sister’s idea was genuinely clever – Saturn as ring bearer is a solid pun for a space-themed wedding. A quick photo op, a laugh, then changing into formal wear would have been the ideal way to keep the spirit alive without overshadowing the ceremony. Many people pull off light-hearted wedding surprises exactly like that: show up in costume briefly, get the giggles, then blend in respectfully.

What turned it sour was her refusal to compromise. When the groom clearly stated the dress code and asked her to change, digging in turned a funny moment into a power play. Weddings aren’t just about the couple’s joy; they’re highly emotional events where guests are expected to honor the tone set by the hosts.

Refusing to adapt – especially as a key participant like ring bearer – can feel like stealing the spotlight or dismissing the couple’s vision. The broader lesson here is about reading the room. Jokes are great, but when someone says “this matters to me,” backing down gracefully shows love and maturity. The groom wasn’t being dramatic; he was protecting the sanctity of his day.

LPT: whenever you wear a costume, always bring a set of normal back up clothes. There are so many reasons why you might want to change.

It's funny to me, a bystander who hasn't spent the last 14 months planning a multi-thousand dollar, once in a lifetime, highly emotional event.

But it should have been a 10 minute joke. The planet/llama shows up, we take a couple silly photos then the planet/llama goes home to change/do regular llama s__t.

I would have hilariously embodied Saturn as a joke but in a more classy, creative way that also complies with the formal dress code,

This story shows how even the best-intentioned jokes can fall flat when they clash with someone’s deeply personal vision. The sister’s Saturn costume could have been a legendary wedding moment – if only she’d treated it as a quick gag instead of a hill to die on. In the end, the groom chose his day over a sibling standoff, and most agree that was the mature move.
