AITA for not wanting to remove my tubes?

A 23-year-old woman, expecting her third child, found herself in a heated conflict with her 34-year-old husband over permanent birth control. He demanded she get her tubes removed after the birth, refusing a vasectomy due to past medical issues from his military service. Threatening to withhold intimacy, self-harm, or even infidelity if she refused, he left her feeling pressured and scared. This dilemma raised questions about bodily autonomy and relationship dynamics.

Turning to Reddit’s AITA community, she sought validation for standing her ground. With a young family already, including a child with special needs, the decision weighed heavily on her. The story uncovers layers of control, past traumas, and the fear of closing the door on future possibilities, drawing readers into a tense debate on personal choices in marriage.

The woman’s refusal to undergo tubal ligation highlights a critical issue of bodily autonomy in relationships, where one partner’s demands override the other’s comfort. Her husband’s threats of self-harm, infidelity, and divorce indicate coercive control, a form of emotional abuse that manipulates through fear. This dynamic is exacerbated by their age gap and his history of multiple marriages, raising concerns about power imbalances.

Dr. Lundy Bancroft, author of “Why Does He Do That?”, explains, “Abusers often use threats of suicide or violence to maintain control, shifting blame onto the victim” (2002). Here, the husband’s refusal to consider a vasectomy while demanding she alter her body permanently suggests entitlement, not shared decision-making. His dismissal of birth control options further limits her choices, potentially trapping her in a cycle of dependency.

Socially, this reflects broader patterns where women bear the burden of contraception, especially in unequal partnerships. The military background and disability add layers of trauma, possibly contributing to his rigid stance, but don’t excuse abusive behavior. Mental health support could address underlying issues, but threats signal a need for immediate safety measures.

She should seek counseling independently, perhaps through domestic violence resources, to evaluate the relationship’s health. Documenting threats is crucial for potential legal protection. Prioritizing her well-being and children’s safety over marital pressure is essential; no one should face organ removal under duress.

Ultimately, her instinct to protect her future options is valid. Exploring reversible methods or therapy together might help, but only if safety is assured. If patterns persist, separation could be necessary to escape control.

  1. Tell him to PLEASE go ahead and slam his lower parts in a car door, then sell tickets. Kidding aside, he doesn’t get to make decisions about your body.

  3. Girl… you’re 23 years old. I would not be removing my tubes at that age. Mine were removed at 35, when i was 100% sure I was done having children, after having 3 and a miscarriage.

You have your whole life still ahead, including possibly having more children. I encourage you to really think about this. Doctors, at least where I live, would tell you the same thing and be hesitant to remove them at such a young age.

Your husband, honestly, sounds like a piece of work and I don’t see that working out in the long-term. The amount of red flags… you’re his 3rd wife? Why did the others not work out? There’s a lot to unpack, and I don’t see it ending well with what you’ve said in your post. You need to focus on YOU and those babies. You’re stronger than you think! <3

  5. Tell him to go ahead and smash his privates in a car door. If he backs out on that, divorce him. He does NOT get to demand that you have an unnecessary operation because he “doesn’t like” the other methods available.
