WIBTA for revealing where my kids college money came from?

Imagine the joy of securing a financial boost for your kids’ future, only to have it tainted by your family’s snide remarks. A 43-year-old single mom found herself in this exact pickle when her ex-brother-in-law quietly funded her children’s college savings. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she shared the news with her family, hoping for cheers. Instead, they spun a cruel narrative, joking she earned the money through “favors” with her boss, turning her relief into humiliation.

The sting of their words cuts deep, especially from her sister and brother, who keep the “joke” alive at every gathering. Now, she’s tempted to reveal the truth—that her ex-brother-in-law is the generous donor—to shut them up. But with her sister still bitter from the divorce, would this truth bomb do more harm than good? This tangled web of family loyalty and hurt feelings sets the stage for a juicy debate.

‘WIBTA for revealing where my kids college money came from?’

Family gatherings shouldn’t feel like a roast, but for this single mom, her siblings’ cruel jokes about her kids’ college fund source turned celebration into shame. Wanting to clear her name by revealing her ex-brother-in-law’s generosity is understandable, but it risks stirring up her sister’s post-divorce bitterness. The siblings’ taunts, disguised as humor, cross into bullying, reflecting a lack of respect. Her hesitation to disclose the truth shows sensitivity to her sister’s feelings, but the ongoing mockery demands a response.

This scenario highlights a broader issue: family boundaries and the harm of unchecked gossip. A study from the Journal of Family Issues notes that 65% of family conflicts stem from poor communication and assumptions, often escalating during financial discussions. Here, the family’s “jokes” weaponize a sensitive topic, undermining trust.

Dr. Harriet Lerner, a family therapist, states, “Silence in the face of hurtful behavior often enables it to continue” (The Dance of Connection). The mom’s instinct to reveal the truth could reset boundaries, but she should first consult her ex-brother-in-law to respect his privacy. A firm, direct approach—calmly telling her family the jokes are hurtful and must stop—could halt the gossip without exposing the donor. If that fails, sharing the truth with her ex-brother-in-law’s consent might redirect their focus. Readers can learn from this: address hurtful behavior head-on with clear communication to protect your peace while preserving family ties.

  4. The FIRST thing that came to mind was WHY DID SHE TELL THEM????
Like when people win a lottery and tell everybody and how much they won – or when people receive an inheritance. You shouldn’t voluntarily say ANYthing. They’ll come out of the woodwork telling you sob stories that are supposed to be reason enough for you to give them money. I hope you’ve learned a lesson here.

Now you’re stuck. Talk with your ex-bil. If you tell, you probably will have problems with jealousy and even accusations. I dont know a solution. Maybe he will. Just keep your mouth shut. Its nobody’s business. Your daughter could have just started college and the assumption would be that she was working part time and somehow you were managing.
