AITA for calling ourselves vegan?

Picture a cozy vegan kitchen, filled with the scent of fresh herbs and simmering lentils, now disrupted by an unexpected guest: raw chicken necks. For one couple, devoted vegans and proud cat parents, their commitment to their rescued feline’s health has stirred a storm among friends. When their cat’s sore teeth made kibble a struggle, they followed the vet’s advice to try raw meat, only to be branded “fake vegans” by horrified guests.

This clash of ideals and pet love brews a relatable tale of loyalty—to both principles and a furry companion. As accusations fly and friendships fray, the couple’s story pulls us into the heart of a moral dilemma: can you stay true to veganism while feeding your carnivorous cat? With Reddit buzzing, this narrative captures the messy balance of ethics and responsibility.

‘AITA for calling ourselves vegan?’

So we’re both vegan and have been for years.. Last year we got a beautiful cat who is the grand baby neither of our parents will ever have.. She’s obviously an obligate carnivore and we’ve been feeding her kibble and wet food.

Unfortunately, where she came from wasn’t a very good situation and she had horrible teeth when we rescued her. It hasn’t come to a point where she’s painful and doesn’t want to eat kibble but if it does, wet food will just make it worse.

We went on a website for rawfeeding animals and bought her some chicken necks and chicken hearts. According to the vet, this should encourage her to use her teeth as it smell “more appetising” than space nuggets. We’ve obviously been quite uncomfortable with this as it’s raw meat in our otherwise vegan home but we’d do anything for our little gremlin so it’s worth it.

We’ve since had some friends over who were horrified when we got raw meat out and asked us if we weren’t vegan and we said that we were and still are, but that kitty is not. They’re now saying we’re fake vegans and that we don’t care about animal welfare if we’re feeding her raw meat.

We don’t see the issue, as these are part of a chicken that humans wouldn’t eat and we are following what our vet told us to keep our baby at optimal health. In our minds, these parts of already slaughtered animals would otherwise just be thrown away.

This has created quite a bit of drama in our friend group as some people are now accusing us of being hypocrites while the other half say that we’re just caring for our cat.. Are we the assholes here?Edit : if we didn’t feed her raw meat she would have kibble instead but she’s reluctant to eat that when her teeth are sore.

Choosing pet food shouldn’t feel like defusing a bomb, but for this vegan couple, it’s a minefield of judgment. Their decision to feed their cat raw meat, guided by a vet, prioritizes her health over strict vegan ideals. Yet, their friends’ outrage highlights a tension: can personal ethics bend for a pet’s needs without betraying core beliefs?

This scenario reflects broader debates within veganism about pet ownership. A 2021 study in Animals journal found 35% of vegan pet owners struggle with feeding meat-based diets, citing ethical discomfort. The couple’s choice to use chicken byproducts—parts often discarded—shows pragmatic care, not hypocrisy. Their cat, an obligate carnivore, can’t thrive on plants, unlike humans.

Dr. Patty Khuly, a veterinarian, states, “Cats require meat to meet their nutritional needs; denying this can lead to serious health issues” . Her perspective underscores the couple’s responsible choice, aligning with animal welfare over rigid ideology. The friends’ criticism seems more about gatekeeping veganism than genuine concern.

To move forward, the couple could explain their vet-driven decision calmly, emphasizing their cat’s unique needs. Hosting a meat-free dinner to refocus on shared values might ease tensions. Their approach shows veganism can coexist with pet care, proving love for animals sometimes means messy compromises.

Heres what people had to say to OP:

Reddit didn’t hold back, dishing out support with a side of snark for this vegan pet saga. From cheers to jabs at the friends’ logic, here’s the unfiltered scoop from the crowd:

Femalamalamaloid − NTA NTA NTA! Cats are obligate carnivores as you rightly stated. Good for you, don’t listen to your vegan friends, you are doing the best for your kitty 🐱

[Reddit User] − NTA. And your 'friends' are the type of people that make me hate most vegans. That's what she'd eat in the wild. Or mice or rabbits. You're amazing pet owners.

Imightbemarzipan − NTA. You do care about animal welfare. That's why you're taking care of your animal with food that she will actually eat that otherwise would've just been thrown away.

MarsNirgal − NTA. You're vegan because you can, your cat is not because she can't. Seems stupidly simply for me.

[Reddit User] − NTA. You're not a fake vegan. Animals will always eat other animals, this is nature. You are doing what the vet advised and what you should be doing for this cat.. Anyone who is giving you trouble for that is no animal lover and is an i**ot

Nakedstar − NTA.. You are vegan. Your partner is vegan. Vegan diets are suitable for humans.. Your cat is a carnivore. Vegan diets are not suitable for cats.. You are doing nothing wrong.. However there are people that do eat chicken necks, but that's neither here nor there. ;) You guys are simply being responsible pet owners and there's nothing wrong with that. Your cat can't help she's a cat and has to eat meat.

cantankerouswhale − NTA - Cats are carnivores. They need to eat meat. Vegans who force malnourishment on their pets don't care about animals as much as they think they do.

ReeKristen − NTA. As long as your cat is an inside only cat, then you are doing fine. I have an issue with a friend of mine who calls herself an animal rights activist and climate conservationist... but she lets her three cats outside to decimate bird populations and hunt for fun \[not food.\].

Giving your animal food they need that would otherwise be tossed out is not wrong. Letting your animal out into the world to kill wildlife while you pretend to be vegan would be wrong. Since you are not doing that, you are in the clear.

[Reddit User] − No you’re not an a**hole you’re friends are pretentious ignorant shits.

riningear − NTA. The philosophy of veganism as I understand it involves a genuine care for animals. If you don't take care of your cat of all creatures correctly, what kind of vegan are you? (Answer is, 'a bad one.')

These Redditors rallied behind the couple, praising their pet care and slamming the friends’ sanctimonious stance. Some called the accusations absurd, while others urged cutting ties with such rigid critics. But do these fiery takes capture the full picture, or are they just fanning the drama?

This vegan-versus-cat tale proves principles can get tangled in the fur of real life.
